More Great Information on Spanish Flamenco:
The Pioneers of Flamenco Guitar Music
Today’s Flamenco Music has much in common with the tops of Egypt’s pyramids. Like the pinnacles of those ancient monuments held up by the boulders below – our modern Flamenco Music is supported by the musical innovations of Flamenco’s Founding Fathers.Ramon Montoya,Sabicas and Nino Ricardo are the three players who merit this distinction.Like countless guitarists who came before him, Ramon Montoya began his career providing the music for singers and dancers. But Montoya, the self-taught son of Gypsy cattle traders, through sheer perserverance and dedication, achieved a milestone in the history of Flamenco Guitar. By giving solo performances, he lifted the Flamenco Guitar from it’s accompanying role to concert status.By a strange co-incidence it was Montoya's nephew - Carlos Montoya - who was most responsible for concentrating International attention on the Flamenco Guitar as a solo concert instrument. From the 20's through the 50's he composed and gave concerts in almost every country. Even filling the Houston astrodome! And locating himself in New York.Today it's Carlos - not Ramon - who is the most famous Montoya. Strangely,Ramon didn't like his nephews style, and offered him no encouragement. Thus Carlos Montoya's premier guitar teacher was the village barber. However, when all is said and done, the distinction of being Flamenco Guitar's first solo performer rests with Ramon Montoya."The best technique around has got to be Sabicas, the Flamenco player." That was how the late American guitar great Chet Atkins described “Sabicas.” The Second Founding Father of Flamenco. Noted especially for his unfailing rhythmic sense, Sabicas continued to evolve the contributions of Ramon Montoya. After leaving Spain in 1936 with the outbreak of Civil War, Sabicas toured South America with the dancer Carmen Amaya. In a different sytyle and approach from Ramon Montoya, Sabicas breath-taking technical prowess, combined with his quality compositions, made him the second major contributor to the evolution of Flamenco Guitar Music. He was the most famous guitarist of his day. Slavishly imitated. But never duplicated. Nino Ricardo, Flamenco Guitar Music’s third Founding Father, was, like his predessors, totally unique and original. Particularly so for his upwardly curving fingernails. Which obviously resulted in a unique tone and playing style. His involved and rhythmically elaborate compositions germinated during his early years playing in the smokey bars of Seville. His hometown. Nino’s death from liver cancer at age 68, was quite probably a result of those "bar wars" years. Advancing and innovating on the legacy of Sabicas and the Montoyas', Nino Ricardo evolved and advanced Flamenco Guitar music to an enormous degree.Honoring and further expanding the heritage of the Montoyas’, Sabicas and Nino Ricardo is – Santiago Cortez. One of today’s most innovative composer/guitarists. Although blessed with formidable technical prowess, Santiago never lets it obscure his genuine gift for melody. His great strength as a composer is his ability to seamlessly integrate elements of diverse genres of music into his original creations. Jazz, Pop, Rock, Classical, Folk, Celtic, Reggae and World Music are just some of the colors on Santiago’s musical palette. In the true spirit of Flamenco’s Founding Fathers, Santiago Cortez is at once honouring, and continuing to evolve, their priceless musical legacy.
