More Great Information on Rev John:

Nerine - The Legendary Guernsey Lily   by John J. Marshall

Far within the East, and lengthy to us unknown,
A lily bloom'd, of colours quaint and rare
Nothing like our lilies, whitened, and dimly fair,
But clad like Eastern monarch on his throne.
A spead boat there is by stress of tempest blown,
And wreck'd on beach, all sandy, flat, and bare-
The storm-god bated of his rage to spare
The queenly flower, foredoom'd to become our very own.
The Guernsey fisher, seeking exactly what the ocean
Had stolen to assist his hungry poverty,
Begins to behold the stranger from afar,
And miracles exactly what the gorgeous factor may be,
That they like an unsphered and dejected star
Gleam'd in forlorn and mateless majesty.

-Hartley Coleridge (1796-1849, boy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

Thus did Coleridge tell the storyline from the Guernsey Lily in poetic verse. To substantiate it, he incorporated an estimate from Beckman's Inventions, Vol. III.

The Guernsey Lily seemed to be a plant of great interest towards the Rev. William Herbert (1778-1847), botanist, poet and Anglican clergyman. Herbert was a specialist within the Amaryllidaceae family, and that he recognized the Guernsey lily like a member. In addition, he was knowledgeable that Francis Masson (1741-1805) had collected individuals throughout his botanical search for the Cape of Nigeria (1772-1775) for Kew Gardens.

The correct answer is entirely possible that Guernsey lilies put together in Japan. Move was much more common and complicated just before the 1700s than we give credit for. Or Kaempher and Thunberg, whom Beckman recommended, may have mistaken Lycoris (and in the Amaryllidaceae family) for Guernsey lilies.

Nonetheless, the storyplot from the ill-fated ship and the development of the guarana plant towards the rocky shores of Guernsey apparently caught the flamboyant of Herbert. As being a scholar and poet themself, he or she must have known lines like these:

Frequently in fall-time once the grapes are ripening, a Nereis increases the rocks, and under cover from the shades of evening brushes the ocean-water from her eyes having a leafy vine-spray, and snatches sweet groupings in the hillsides. Frequently may be the vintage spread through the neighbouring foam Satyri plunge in to the waters, and Panes in the mountain are fain to understand the Ocean-Nymph as she flies naked with the waves.
-Statius, Silvae 2. 2

So, Herbert named the fall-blooming genus Nerine (pronounced ne-REE-nee), the patronym from the watery nymphs referred to as Nereids, kids of Nereus, who resided with him inside a silvery cavern underneath the Aegean Ocean. In Greek mythology, Nereids were patrons of seafarers, frequently visiting their save from shipwrecks. Shipwrecked or otherwise, mariners were always glad to determine women, even when they smelled like seafood.

The genus includes about thirty species. Colors vary from whitened to pink and red-colored. They work effectively in container gardens, bulb gardens and edges. Guernsey lilies are excellent for cutting. (Incidentally, the area is legendary for that Guernsey cut flower industry.) They're also superb for naturalizing.

Nerines need hardly any attention. Plant them in spring. After blooming in fall, the leaves persist through the winter, and switch yellow at the end of spring. The lights are dormant throughout summer time. Throughout blooming even though foliage exists, they might require moist, well-drained soil. Drier soil is nice throughout dormancy. Actually, nerine tolerate summer time drought very well. As with every lights, permit the leaves to show brown before getting rid of them. Early removal prevents the lights from storing reserves for an additional year.

Plant hardiness differs based on species, but generally sturdy from USDA climate zones eight to ten, needing full sun to partial shade and soil full of organic matter. Suggested pH comes from 6.1 to 7.8.

Before planting, have a sample of the soil for your local Cooperative Extension Service office. For any nominal fee, they'll send it to some lab for analysis and return a study for you.

Unless of course you're naturalizing them within the lawn, prepare the planting mattress by creating a minimum of 10" deep, getting rid of all traces of weeds. Compressed soil ought to be cultivated to 12" deep. Common soil changes include sulfur for lowering , limestone for raising , sand for helping drainage, clay for slowing down drainage, gypsum for splitting up caking clay and compost for enriching the soil. Bone meal is particularly great for lights. Which you need to use is dependent upon the advice from the lab analysis based on your unique circumstance.

Your soil sample report includes fertilizer recommendations. A sensible practice would be to mix 5 tbsps of 10-10-10 fertilizer and a pair of glasses of bone meal per ten sq ft section of bulb garden. Don't allow synthetic fertilizer enter into direct connection with plants.

Plant nerine lights 8 inches deep and 8 inches apart in spring. Depth is measured to the foot of the opening.

After lengthy winters, we yearn to become saved by spring flowers. But we frequently forget that after fall-time comes we want individuals strange lilies that look like stars within our gardens. Consider planting Guernsey lilies this spring.
