The important creation of Tibetan modernist

, Gyatso grew up under the totalitarian ubiquity of Maoist ideology and imagery. 'Everything in our home was Chinese and the entire family strictly adhered to party guidelines'. The son of government employees (his mother was a clerk in a government office and his father a soldier in the PLA), he was educated in schools reserved for the offspring of such workers, where the PRC vision of 'minority' Tibet held sway. Students were drilled in reverence for Mao Zedong and the heroes of the Cultural Revolution and trained to despise the Dalai Lama and the religious system he embodied. At the age of seventeen, Gyatso took a job as a Tibet trekking tours guide at the 'Museum of the Revolution' built on the site of the demolished Nangtseshar (a pre-1959 court house and prison) in Shol. As we have seen, the museum contained a display of 'the evils of the old, "preliberation" society', such as the practice of Tibetan Buddhism. With an extensive background in party propaganda, Gyatso had little difficulty in adopting the Communist view that religion was a wasteful, oppressive system that had led to the iniquities of 'feudalism' in pre-1959 Tibet. His job at the museum began in the year after the death of Mao, hence he became part of the campaign to remind Tibetans of how bad their lives might have been without Maoist intervention. At this time Gyatso's education had left him unable to imagine anything other than the PRC's representation of Tibet, past and present.
However, in 1978 his pro-Maoist world view received an abrupt jolt, partly as a result of his interest in art. During his time at the museum, Gyatso met some of the Lhasa University art teachers and was invited to accompany them on a project to make drawings and 'give ideological advice' to 'peasants' in Chamdo in Kham. The 'peasants' turned out to be his fellow Tibetans living in poverty as a result of government policies which demanded that Tibetan farmers donate half their yield to the Motherland, whilst the rest could be claimed by government employees. This experience raised some doubts in Gyatso's mind, and he began to question some of the assumptions he had held since child- hood. When the opportunity to study art at the Minority School in Beijing arose in 1979 he found himself surrounded by students from 'forty to fifty' different 'minorities' and was again shocked by this experience. Of his 'minority' classmates, he and two other Tibetans were the only ones who retained some knowledge of their mother tongue and its script. Hence during four years of tuition in two styles of Chinese Painting and the 'strict guidelines as to what art should be likefig Gyatso instead became highly conscious of the distinctiveness of his own 'minority' heritage. On visits to museums and libraries in the capital of the PRC he also discovered the culture of places further afield. He read Nietzsche and Sartre, books on Millet and Van Gogh and was introduced to Western Modernist art among the Beijing avant-garde. The son of Tibetan Communists decided that 'all these Western ideas flowing into China were the fruits of free societies with free markets, freedom of expression and concepts of democracy'.
