Im planning a drawing right now, Ill be doing a large portrait of Gaspard Ulliel.
It is for my art class, But im already quite established with pencil drawings.
I do photo realistic (ok, attempt to 
) portraits, and I have only ever worked on smaller scales. Like, nothing bigger than 8X11 ish
well now im doing something around 16 inches, or higher tall.

I'd do the drawing first, if you're anything like me you'd probably end up with a lot of smudges that occur as you draw. Then us your pencil to sketch in the background (a cross hatch pattern would work well) and smudge it in to darken it and even the background color out.
If you're drawing in charcoal, do the background in charcoal,but if you're working in pencil, stick to pencil or you will likely loose your picture in the charcoal background.
